Associate Director - Neighbourhood Energy City of Vancouver Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Presentation Description: This presentation will highlight the journey the City of Vancouver's Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU) has taken to become a fixture of the City’s commitment to climate action, efficiently supplying low carbon heat to some of the City's most densely populated communities.
Come and learn about how it started, where we are today, and where we're headed as we share insights about the journey which includes successfully turning sewage into an energy resource for the community and beyond.
Case Study: False Creek Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU)
How it started: In 2010, the City of Vancouver's NEU was established to supply low carbon heat to the 2010 Winter Olympic Village. This would be the first district energy system in North America to demonstrate sewage heat recovery.
Where we are today: Now a mature utility supplying heat to 47 buildings (and growing), the NEU has successfully expanded the sewage heat recovery system, tripling the utility's low carbon capacity.
Where we are headed: Guided by a decarbonization roadmap, the NEU is assessing opportunities to support the continued expansion and decarbonization of the utility while responding to the evolving needs of the community it serves.
